There’s a myth going around that a headboard has to be expensive to look good. It’s just not true, lol! Some of the prettiest bedrooms I’ve seen online used a fabric scrap, a can of paint or literally nothing but a curtain rod.
This list rounds up 19 headboard ideas that actually work in real bedrooms, not just in a designer showroom. I scrolled through hundreds of pins to find these. I only kept the ones that looked doable on a normal weekend.
Some of these are full builds. Others are a couple hours with a glue gun and a trip to the craft aisle. Either way, nobody needs a contractor for any of this!
You’ll find wood, fabric, paint and even a few no-tool options in here. Is your bed frame boring right now? Let’s fix that.
Under each idea you’ll find the little details that matter, plus a link to the full how-to. Which one matches your weekend energy?
BED HEADBOARD IDEAS
Rattan Fan Headboard Design
We’re starting off strong with the rattan fan headboard.
My own place still doesn’t have one and I’m a little jealous, honestly. Natural texture warms up an all-white bedroom fast. Not bad for one wall!
- The sunburst everyone asks about
- Lightweight enough to hang alone
- Pairs well with linen bedding
Velvet Tufted Headboard Look
How cute is this velvet tufted look? I always assumed tufting would be a nightmare to keep dust free and I was right!
Deep jewel tones work especially well here, though a soft blush does the job too. Still worth it every time I walk past mine!
- Boutique hotel energy on a Tuesday
- Foam board keeps it budget friendly
- Button tufting adds the depth
Reclaimed Wood Plank Headboard
Reclaimed wood plank headboards bring in that farmhouse warmth without trying too hard. Every plank has its own knots and color. So no two headboards ever look the same.
This is exactly the project I keep threatening to steal them for, haha! Someday I’ll actually do it.
- Every plank tells its own story
- Salvage yard finds work great
- Sand once for splinters, that’s it
Upholstered Wingback Headboard Style
The upholstered wingback style brings serious drama to a bedroom. Those tall curved sides practically beg you to prop up pillows and disappear into a book.
I built one from plywood and batting and nobody has ever guessed. It reads expensive even when it started as scraps in my garage. That’s the whole trick, lol!
- Reads expensive, isn’t
- Wings block drafts from the wall
- Great for small reading nooks
Woven Macrame Headboard Wall
Woven macrame headboard walls feel like a boho dream, honestly.
No sawing or stapling involved at all, just a wall hanging doing double duty. Knots and fringe beat a flat headboard every time. Who doesn’t love that?
- Zero tools, all texture
- Cotton cord holds knots best
- Works over any bed size
Floral Painted Headboard Mural
A hand painted floral mural turns the wall behind the bed into the actual art piece. No frame needed, no hanging hardware, just paint and a plan.
I tried a vine version once and messed up the first attempt badly. Second try looked intentional, so patience actually paid off there. Same!
Shiplap Accent Wall Headboard
Shiplap accent walls give a headboard shape without an actual headboard at all. I keep threatening to copy her but I never get past the paint chips.
Paint it white for coastal or go dark for drama. Either way it becomes the backdrop everyone notices first!
- The wall does the work here
- Nail up strips in an afternoon
- Caulk hides the seams fast
Canopy Curtain Headboard Frame
Canopy curtain frames turn a plain bed into something that feels like a whole moment. Sheer fabric draped from a simple frame softens the entire room instantly.
It’s just fabric and a frame, but the effect is dramatic. Who wouldn’t want that view every morning?
- Drama with just fabric and a frame
- Sheer panels let light through
- PVC pipe works under the fabric
Leather Channel Tufted Headboard
Leather channel tufting brings a masculine, tailored look that pairs well with dark wood. Those vertical channels create shadow lines that shift with the light.
I went faux leather to keep costs down and nobody’s noticed the difference. This one’s for anyone chasing a boutique hotel feel at home. Total win!
- Shadow lines that shift all day
- Faux leather keeps cost low
- Channels hide seams cleanly
Bookshelf Storage Headboard Wall
Who says a headboard can’t also be storage? This bookshelf wall holds your favorite reads plus a lamp within reach.
My own bedside table disappeared the second I tried this setup. Small bedrooms benefit most since nothing extra needs floor space. Function wins again!
- Storage that pretends to be decor
- Holds a lamp and a stack of books
- Frames the bed on both sides
Minimalist Floating Wood Headboard
If you’re after these these modern enough for a streamlined bedroom, this floating wood one is the answer. A single slab mounted flush to the wall keeps everything clean.
I hate visual clutter and this fixed my biggest bedroom complaint instantly. No legs, no frame touching the floor, just one calm line!
- One clean line, nothing extra
- Mounts flush with no visible legs
- Warm wood softens a stark room
Geometric Metal Frame Headboard
Geometric metal frames bring an industrial edge without feeling cold. Thin black lines against soft bedding create contrast that photographs well.
The lines seem to echo whatever’s happening outside. Even on a gray day it somehow looks intentional.
- Thin lines, big impact
- Powder coated finish resists scratches
- Pairs well with brass hardware
Curved Boucle Fabric Headboard
Curved boucle fabric headboards are everywhere right now, for good reason. I keep touching mine every time I walk past it.
Are you guys seeing how cozy this looks? Nobody in my house wants a sharp corner anymore, lol!
- Impossible not to touch it
- Curved shape softens sharp rooms
- Boucle hides small wrinkles easily
Sleek Black Platform Headboard
A sleek black platform headboard is basic and proud of it. Low to the ground, no fuss, just a solid slab that lets the bedding talk. My loudest comforter finally has a backdrop that behaves itself!
It works in nearly any room since black goes with everything.
- Basic and proud
- Low profile suits small rooms
- Matte finish hides dust well
Painted Wood Pallet Headboard
Painted wood pallet headboards are the poster child for diy headboard ideas easy cheap projects. Honestly they deserve the reputation! A few pallets, some sanding and a coat of paint gets you most of the way there.
It cost him basically nothing and still holds up. That thing has outlasted two of his girlfriends, lol!
- The apartment starter project
- Pallets often free behind stores
- Two coats of paint covers everything
Fabric Wrapped Foam Headboard
Fabric wrapped foam headboards are the easiest entry point if you have never built anything before. I tried this on a rainy Sunday assuming I would mess it up. It took under an hour and actually worked, no shame in that!
Sometimes the low bar is exactly where you want to be, haha!
- Under an hour, no tools required
- Craft aisle foam works fine
- Staple gun does all the heavy lifting
Washi Tape Wall Headboard
Washi tape headboards are proof you do not need a single tool for any of this. Tape strips of color onto the wall in a headboard shape. My roommate did this in college and peeled it up before every inspection.
This one’s for renters who can’t drill a single hole. Talk about commitment free decorating!
- Zero holes, zero commitment
- Peels off without damaging paint
Curtain Rod Fabric Headboard
A curtain rod fabric headboard might be the fastest project on this entire list. Hang a rod, drape fabric over it and let the ends pool for softness.
I picked a fabric that doesn’t fray so there’s basically no sewing involved. Fifteen minutes and mine was already done. Not in my book has any other project been that fast!
- Fifteen minutes, no sewing at all
- Tension rod needs no drilling
Stenciled Faux Headboard Wall
Last but definitely not least, we have the stenciled faux headboard wall. Paint a headboard shape directly onto the wall with a stencil and skip building anything at all.
This one fools people every single time. Sweet, simple and done in an afternoon.
- Fools everyone until they touch it
- Stencil tape keeps lines crisp
