Happy grad season, you guys! I don’t know about you, but this time of year turns my whole kitchen counter into a diploma factory, lol!
Every May my neighbors host a big backyard party and somehow half the neighborhood shows up with a tray of something sweet. Last year three of us brought cookies shaped like caps and we all had a good laugh about it.
Since graduation party food ideas are basically the whole reason people show up early, I’ve gathered 20 adorable ideas the entire family will love. How great is that?
From cookies to popcorn bars and lei ideas, don’t fret if you’ve never thrown a party like this before. This list also covers decor and outfits, so you’re fully set for the big day!
Under each idea I’ve added the little details you actually want to know. There’s also a link to the full step-by-step wherever there’s one to share.
Make sure to prepare plenty because the food table always empties faster than expected. Who doesn’t love a party that runs itself, am I right?
GRADUATION PARTY FOOD IDEAS
Diploma Shaped Sugar Cookies
We’re starting off strong with diploma shaped sugar cookies. Roll the dough thin, cut a rectangle, then tie a little icing ribbon around the middle so it looks like a tiny scroll.
They disappeared before the speeches even started, haha!
She used a lemon glaze instead of plain icing and it made all the difference.
- The scroll shape everyone asks about
- Icing ribbon takes two minutes
- Keeps well overnight in a tin
Grad Cap Cupcake Tower
How cute is this grad cap cupcake tower? Fondant caps sit right on top of plain cupcakes and the whole tower becomes the centerpiece nobody expects.
Store-bought cupcakes work fine here, so there’s zero baking pressure for me. Every single time, guests fight over the top layer first!
- Tower height without the fuss
- Fondant caps from a craft aisle kit
- No baking required at all
Mortarboard Rice Krispie Treats
Mortarboard rice krispie treats travel well and need no fork. Cut them into squares, add a chocolate square on top and a thin licorice tassel and suddenly they’re wearing tiny caps.
I’ve thrown these in a backpack more than once and they never fall apart. That alone earns them a permanent spot on my list!
A little melted chocolate as glue keeps every tassel exactly in place.
- The one that survives a car ride
- Licorice tassel finishes it off
- Ready in under an hour
Graduation Cake Pop Display
This graduation cake pop display is fancy looking with basically no effort. Push each pop into a styrofoam base wrapped in school colored paper and the whole thing looks bakery-level.
It buys me a quiet twenty minutes every single time!
- Looks bakery-level with zero decorating skill
- Styrofoam base wrapped in colored paper
- Sprinkles keep kids busy
School Color Fruit Skewers
School color fruit skewers are the healthy option nobody complains about. Alternate melon, grapes and berries so the colors line up with whatever team the graduate cheered for.
It technically counts as fruit salad, so that’s my story and I’m sticking to it, lol!
A quick drizzle of honey right before serving keeps them tasting fresh.
- The healthy plate that still matches the party
- Any fruit already in the fridge works
- Skewers from the dollar store
Grad Themed Popcorn Bar
A grad themed popcorn bar keeps the crowd busy between speeches. Set out a few flavors, some school colored candy melts and let everyone build their own bag.
I never have to explain this one twice. Nobody needs instructions to grab popcorn, haha!
Little paper bags with the grad’s initials make the whole setup feel extra special.
- The station that runs itself all afternoon
- Three flavors keeps the line moving
- Bags from a party supply store
Sports Themed Grad Balloon Arch
Boys graduation party ideas usually start with something sporty. This balloon arch nails it.
Jerseys, footballs and school color balloons twist into an entrance nobody misses. He would not budge!
It set the whole tone before anyone reached the food table!
- The entrance that photographs itself
- Balloons from a party supply aisle
- Sports props hung between clusters
Varsity Letterman Backdrop Setup
This varsity letterman backdrop turns any blank wall into a photo moment. A giant felt letter, some ribbon and school colors are the entire shopping list.
Not that I’m particular about backdrops or anything, but this one earns its spot, lol!
It also folds flat for storage, which matters more than people think.
- The wall everyone stops in front of
- Felt letter from the craft aisle
- Ribbon in school colors
Alma Mater Photo Booth Backdrop
College graduation party ideas need a backdrop that says exactly where the diploma came from. This alma mater setup does that.
Print the school crest big, frame it with string lights and the photo booth line forms instantly. I lost count of how many photos got taken at this spot last year.
- The corner where every photo happens
- School crest printed poster size
- String lights already in a drawer somewhere
Diploma Scroll Table Centerpiece
A diploma scroll table centerpiece is simple and it works. Roll a print of the diploma design, tie it with a ribbon and lean it against a small vase of flowers.
I have zero crafting talent and this still looked intentional. That is basically the whole point!
A tiny sprig of eucalyptus tucked next to it adds a nice touch.
Class of Yard Sign Display
Graduation party ideas high school families love always include a yard sign. This one is the classic.
A big number sign out front tells the whole street what’s happening. My neighbors always slow down to read it on their evening walk.
It never fails, honestly! Who doesn’t slow down for a good yard sign?
- The sign every car slows down for
- Corrugated sign from a print shop
- Stakes already in the garage
Tassel Garland Wall Decor
Tassel garland wall decor is one of those small details that ties a whole room together. String mini tassels in school colors across a mantel or doorway and it instantly looks like a party.
I usually string the whole thing during one podcast episode. Not bad for something that looks this good!
Twenty minutes, tops. The whole room feels finished.
- Podcast length project, honestly
- String from the wrapping drawer
Memory Lane Photo String Display
High school graduation party ideas always seem to include a photo timeline somewhere. This memory lane string display is the sweetest version.
Clip photos from kindergarten through senior year onto twine strung across a wall. Guests spend way more time here than anyone expects.
Same thing happened at the last three parties I attended, haha! Isn’t it funny how everyone stops to look?
- Where guests actually stop and talk
- Mini clothespins hold the photos
Grad Cap Balloon Centerpiece
This grad cap balloon centerpiece is easy to pull together the morning of the party. A cluster of balloons topped with a foam cap sits right in the middle of the table and it looks intentional every time.
I moved mine from the dinner table to the dessert table without a single balloon popping. It just works!
- Moves from table to table with zero fuss
- Foam cap from a craft kit
- Balloons in two school colors
Senior Year Milestone Poster Board
Senior graduation party ideas need at least one poster that walks people through the whole journey. Baby photo, first day of kindergarten, prom picture, cap and gown, the whole story fits on one board.
It always ends up being the thing grandparents linger over the longest!
Printing it on foam board instead of paper keeps it from curling by the end of the night.
- The board grandparents linger at longest
- Photos printed the week before
Future Plans Guestbook Table
A future plans guestbook table gives guests something to do besides eat, which is honestly a win. Set out cards where people write predictions or advice for after graduation.
I pulled ours out at a family gathering years later and everyone lost it laughing. It’s always the highlight!
Some of the predictions were so far off they became a running joke, lol!
Flowy Floral Sundress Look
Graduation party outfit ideas usually start with something breezy. This flowy floral sundress look nails the whole afternoon party vibe. Who wouldn’t want to stay cool while still looking put together?
It works whether the party is in a backyard or a park pavilion. I wore the same dress two years in a row and nobody noticed, lol!
Comfortable wins every time in the heat!
Tailored Jumpsuit With Heels
A tailored jumpsuit with heels dresses things up without going full formal. This look photographs beautifully next to a balloon arch or a backdrop wall.
I sat through a two hour ceremony in mine and it held up fine. That alone counts for a lot!
Swapping the heels for flats later in the night saved me completely.
Money Origami Graduation Lei
Graduation lei ideas got a whole lot more interesting once money origami entered the chat. Fold bills into little flowers or fans and string them onto ribbon for a gift that doubles as decor.
I still tease her about it!
This one gets photographed more than the outfit, honestly! Same!
- The gift that doubles as a photo prop
- Ribbon from the wrapping drawer
- Bills folded the night before
Candy Wrapped Grad Lei
Last but definitely not least, we have this candy wrapped grad lei. String favorite candies onto ribbon and the graduate gets a snack and an accessory at the same time.
Fair warning, everyone at the party will want one made for them too, haha!
Bite sized chocolates work best since they don’t melt as fast in the sun.
- The lei everyone tries to steal a candy from
- Favorite candies from the pantry
